Now that I have looked at it again, I think it looks more like a bug larva, or a thorny snail.

A kiwano is surprisingly delicious. It tastes somewhat like a banana, but has the consistency of a cucumber. The one we bought - for $6 US (Calliope's birthday) - was grown in New Zealand (hence the price), but the fruit is apparently native to Africa.
